Because of COVID-19, there aren’t as many community events as there were a mere 12 months ago. However, there are still ways to stay involved, learn, and do something new in Decatur, IL.
From a Medicare seminar to BINGO, here are several events happening in Decatur that anyone over age 60 can be a part of.

Understanding Alzheimer's and Dementia
When: January 8, 2021 at 12pm

Description: Alzheimer's disease is not a normal part of aging. Join us to learn about the impact of Alzheimer's; the difference between Alzheimer's and dementia; stages and risk factors; current research and treatments available for some symptoms; and Alzheimer's Association resources.

2021 Community Luncheon at D-Boes Chicken and Waffles

Summary: 2020 has been a rough year. Let us break bread together and start the “New Year” on a positive note promoting prosperity, good food, and community support. Must be present to eat. Free. Intro to Archery
When: January 10, 2021 from 4:30pm-5:30pm

Summary: New session starts Sunday Jan. 3rd. This session runs for 3 Sundays. Jan. 3rd, 10th, and 17th at 4:30 P.M. The cost of class is $50 a person. No equipment is necessary. All ages are welcome. Registration at any time, come in a little early on the 3rd to get paperwork done.
Medicare & Retirement Planning Seminar at Sams Ranch

Summary: Join Michael Sams, a 6-time Agent of the Year award winner and passionate senior market insurance agent, for a 1-hour educational seminar on retirement planning, Medicare, and more.
Description: There are a ton of questions and confusion surrounding retirement and Medicare. Over 11,000 people are turning 65 every day, and Michael wants to help with the education process. You have Medicare Supplements, Medicare Advantage, nearly 30 drug plans to choose from… you may also have a retirement account like a 401k or IRA that needs attention. It’s a lot to try to figure out on your own. Michael’s goal with these 1-hour monthly seminars is to take all of the information you need to know and put it into plain English.
If you’re nearing retirement, are new to Medicare, or are soon to be new to Medicare – even if it’s 3, 4, 5 years away – we’d love for you to come. It’s never too early to start preparing for retirement and Medicare. You’re encouraged to bring your spouse.
We cannot emphasize enough that this educational seminar is not a sales presentation; it’s education only. You will not be pitched any products at the end – Michael is deeply passionate about educating his community.

Concealed Carry 101
When: January 23, 2021 at 8am
Where: Archers Alley, 3113 N 22nd St, Decatur, IL
Summary: This is an Illinois State certified class to obtain your concealed carry license (counts as 2nd 8 hours). In this course you will learn: all applicable laws to conceal carry, how to interact with Law enforcement, how to draw from concealed, use of force and much more. Spice Up Your Healthy Meals!

Summary: Transform your ingredients and spice up your meal prep routine with new, unique spice blends! Join Sarah from Common Ground Food Co-op as she demonstrates how to create culturally inspired spice blends for simple, staple ingredients. She'll guide you through four regional spice combinations from India, Japan, Central America, and the Middle East and share tips to lighten your load for the rest of the week. We will also feature titles from the Library's vast collection of beautiful and diverse cookbooks.
Slow the Clock of Aging Group

Organizer: Decatur Macon County Opportunities Corporation (DMCOC)
Summary: Lisa Cline, Certified Recreational Therapist, from Senior Behavioral Health Services, Decatur Memorial Hospital leads a group that is meeting monthly at the Senior Center. Lisa introduces recreational therapeutic activities to encourage people to age in a positive and healthy manner. “I hear someone say, “I am getting old, so I have to give thing up.” I say, “You are getting old because you are giving things up.”
This group is free and is open to anyone 55 years of age and older. Walk-ins are welcome.
Restoring Homestead Prairie Farm: A Look Back in Photos

Summary: Homestead Prairie Farm has been a part of the Macon County Conservation District since the 1970s. Step back in time and see how this site was transformed into a museum by staff and volunteers.

Night at the Lincoln Theater
When: January 30, 2021 from 8pm-1am

Summary: Return with us to the infamous haunted Lincoln Theater — one of the most haunted places in America — and search for the spirits that remain in this former 1916 vaudeville house and movie theater! Discover the haunted history of the building and then join the ghost hunt of the massive auditorium, stage, basement, balcony, and mezzanine and found out for yourself if it’s as haunted as hundreds of people have claimed over the years!
Conclusion
While things aren’t as lively as they once were due to the coronavirus pandemic, there are still ways to get involved in the Decatur community.
