Does Medicare Cover Long-Term Care? (Video)
It depends.
Medicare will cover your care if it’s medically necessary or it’s acute care in the hospital or at your doctor’s office. It will also help for some services that improve your medical condition.
That includes things like physical therapy or rehabilitation.
Medicare also helps cover some medical devices (like wheelers and wheelchairs).
However, Medicare does not help you with services that aid with the Activities of Daily Living. That includes things like bathing, dressing, eating, and getting around.
These non-medical services are needed often (in fact, 70% of seniors age 65+ will need long-term care), and it’s unlikely to be covered by most health insurance policies (even Medigap).
What about Medicaid?
Maybe, but only if you have an extremely low income with hardly any assets.
And what about Veterans benefits?
These benefits also vary based on your income and your service record.
The bottom line is that most of us will be responsible for paying some (or all!) of our long-term care costs.
There are a lot of options to cover these expenses, especially if you plan ahead.
We recommend adding a long-term care rider to your existing life insurance policy. Unlike traditional long-term care insurance, this option makes sure that someone is getting the money you invest.
